Top Audit Manager Interview Questions (and Answers)

By Chris Freyer - June 6th, 2024
Industry Insights

Auditors play a vital role in maintaining financial integrity and compliance within organizations. Therefore, in your audit manager interview, you’ll need to show that you possess the required precision of thought and ethical standards while demonstrating your technical skills, experience, and professional judgment.

Specifically, the interviewer will be looking for evidence of your in-depth knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards, your commitment to maintaining high ethical standards, your desire to stay updated with new regulations and standards, your ability to identify discrepancies in financial records, your capability to evaluate complex information and identify risks, and your skill at clearly articulating audit findings.

What to Know Before Your Audit Manager Interview

Take the time beforehand to make sure you’re able to talk about the role in the auditing process played by the principles in the International Standards on Auditing (ISA), the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and the Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS). Be ready to give examples of your problem-solving skills and ethical standards. And, importantly, study up on the specific risks, challenges, and regulatory environment of the company you’re applying to, along with their culture and methodologies.

Types of Audit Manager Interview Questions

You may be quizzed on your behavioral skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and ethics. The interviewer will also want to understand your ability to articulate findings clearly and maintain client relationships, along with your adaptability and eagerness to continue learning and improving via ongoing education.

You will likely be presented with a hypothetical scenario or even an actual real-world case that will test your practical effectiveness at identifying risks, evaluating controls, and recommending audit strategies. And, of course, your technical expertise will be on trial—as mentioned above, know your ISA, IFRS, and GAAS inside and out.

Sample Audit Manager Interview Questions and How to Respond

“What types of audits have you worked on?”

Briefly explain some of the methodologies you’ve employed, the different financial statements you’ve encountered, and what you’ve learned from dealing with various auditing situations.

“How have you managed a challenging audit in the past?”

Provide a detailed example of a complex audit you performed. Outline the unique situation, the actions you took, and the impact of your analysis, communication, and problem-solving.

“What would you do if you discovered fraud during an audit?”

Detail your approach to handling fraud, including the various standards and practices you’d rely on to detect it, how you would communicate the issue to management, and which regulatory bodies you’d involve, if any.

“How do you remain unbiased when performing an audit?”

Emphasize your strengths: knowledge of the regulations, a strong ethical foundation, integrity in the workplace, and independence from conflicts of interest. If you’ve ever chosen to remove yourself from an audit because it would violate a personal or professional code of conduct, tell that story!

“What would you do if a client disputed the conclusions in your audit?”

This is about your professionalism, grace under pressure, and ability to stand by your findings and make a strong and clear argument for them. Discuss how you would explain the situation to an ordinary businessperson.

“How do you find and evaluate audit risks?”

Talk about the tools and procedures you employ during risk assessment. Reveal the research and analysis you would undertake regarding a client’s history, operations, and industry, and provide any examples of how you modified your approach in the past after uncovering a major risk.
