The Highest Paying Tech Skills for 2024

By John Ternieden - March 1st, 2024
Industry Insights

The level of competition for the highest paying and most sought-after positions in the tech industry continues to grow.  And so, if you are aiming for one of these high-paying positions, you will need to make sure you possess skills worthy of such compensation.

Below you will find five of the highest paying skills in tech for 2024.  Note that machine learning and artificial intelligence remain some of the most sought-after, highest paying skills in the tech space.  So not surprisingly, most skills below will relate in some fashion to machine learning and artificial intelligence.

1. Deep Learning

Deep learning falls under the machine learning umbrella.  Specifically, deep learning uses neural networks to mimic the brain’s ability to learn from data and make decisions.  It is deep learning that powers most of the artificial intelligence in our daily living – such as digital assistants.

According to websites like Glassdoor, deep learning software engineers make between $155,000 and $234,000 a year.

2. Computer Vision

This next high-paying skill is also within the realm of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Computer vision is focused on enabling machines to teach computers and systems to understand and derive information from visual inputs – like images or videos.  The aim of computer vision is to build systems that can inspect visuals and process information quicker than humans can.

These systems are often used in self-driving cars and facial recognition systems.  Glassdoor reports that computer vision engineers can make between $112,000 and $209,000 a year.

3. Generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence – another machine learning and artificial intelligence byproduct – is the technology that allows systems to create content.  The most popular example at the moment might be be ChatGPT.  But the potential of generative artificial intelligence offers far more than highly developed, natural language chatbots.  This technology holds the ability to create images, videos, songs, or even films in a matter of seconds.  While impressive, this technology has already started to create significant legal issues.

Engineers with this kind of skill are seeing a nearly 50 percent salary bump and now averaging yearly salaries of more than $174,000.

4. Cybersecurity

The threat of cyberattacks and data leaks continues to rise.  Between 2021 and 2023, data breaches rose by 72 percent.  Not surprisingly, organizations are desperate to stem the hemorrhaging of their data, and are willing to pay top dollar to those who possess the skills to enhance cyber defenses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects cybersecurity jobs will grow by 32 percent from 2022 to 2032, and Forbes reports that senior-level cybersecurity experts are averaging more than $140,000 a year.

5. User Experience (UX) Design

Much like the benefits of personal computing are lost without operating systems, the true benefit of artificial intelligence and machine learning is lost without a way for users to seamlessly access and interact with those technologies.

UX design remains one of the most critical, and thus highest paying, skills in the tech space.  A top UX designer can create products and services that attract and retain customers, build brand loyalty, and drive customer satisfaction.

According to companies like Uxcel, senior UX/UI designers typically make more than $120,000 a year.
