6 Career Paths in Electrical Engineering

By Chris Freyer - May 9th, 2024
Industry Insights

Electrical engineers are part of a dynamic and growing field, but even longtime practitioners may not realize how many career options are open to them. Here are just a few of the diverse opportunities in electrical engineering—followed by some tips on achieving success in this vital discipline.

Control Systems Engineer

These professionals design and implement systems that regulate processes in various industries. Along with developing algorithms and software for automation and robotics, control systems engineers help optimize production processes for efficiency and safety.

Electronics Engineer

Adept at circuit design, signal processing, and embedded systems development, electronics engineers create, test, and manufacture a wide range of components and systems, from consumer electronics to medical equipment and aerospace systems.

Embedded Systems Engineer

Computer science and electrical engineering come together as embedded systems engineers integrate the hardware and software that power smart devices and electrical/mechanical systems in home appliances, medical instruments, and cars.

Power Systems Engineer

Power systems engineers specialize in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. They design and maintain electrical grids, ensuring reliable and efficient power supply to homes, businesses, and industries, and they are at the forefront of renewable energy technologies.

Signal Processing Engineer

Experts in this sector extract valuable information from raw audio and video signals and sensor data. Signal processing engineers create algorithms and systems to filter, compress, and improve signals for digital communications, audio engineering, radar, sonar, and biomedical imaging.

Telecommunications Engineer

The duties of telecommunications engineers include designing and managing communication networks, both wired and wireless. They work on technologies such as cellular networks, fiber optics, and satellite communications.
